The past two years have been challenging. As a nation, we have dealt with an onslaught of loss – loss of lives, loss of jobs, loss of freedom.

But that loss hasn’t only affected us as individuals.

With almost 12 million South Africans unemployed, South Africa now has the highest unemployment rate on a global list of 82 countries as our country’s jobless rate recently increased to 34.4%. The county’s economy has been rocked by a variety of challenges include COVID-19 lockdown restraints, unrests in economic hubs like KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng and extended periods of loadshedding. And to top this off, this crisis is threatening decades of development gains, further delaying the urgent transition to greener, more inclusive and prosperous economies, and throwing progress on the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals even further off track.

It is time for economic prosperity through job creation to take centre stage in all our minds. It is time for us to hope and strive again as we seek to find ways to make a difference.
