Kate Scholtz & Mpilo Vilakazi

Trainees – Deloitte Cape Town & EY Durban | Co-Founders – Next Gen: Entrepreneurs of the Future

Finalists: SAICA Trainee Trailblazer Awards 2025

Kate Scholtz and Mpilo Vilakazi are third-year CA(SA) trainees whose shared vision for inclusive economic growth led to the creation of Next Gen: Entrepreneurs of the Future — a pioneering programme designed to empower aspiring entrepreneurs at the University of Cape Town (UCT).

Born from their time as Academic Trainees at UCT, Next Gen was developed to address the barriers young people face in accessing entrepreneurial education. The programme offers a flexible, self-paced curriculum that introduces students to the fundamentals of business, financial planning, and sustainability. It directly supports SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).

Kate and Mpilo’s leadership extends beyond curriculum design. They have cultivated a supportive community where participants are encouraged to innovate, collaborate, and pursue their ambitions. Through interactive modules and ongoing networking opportunities, Next Gen equips students with practical skills and a mindset geared toward responsible, sustainable entrepreneurship.

Their commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals is reflected in every aspect of the programme — from content development to participant engagement. By planting the seeds of curiosity and ambition in young entrepreneurs, they are helping build a more equitable and sustainable future for South Africa.

Beyond Next Gen, both Kate and Mpilo have contributed meaningfully to financial literacy and cultural transformation. Kate led the Money Matters Financial Literacy Programme at UCT, helping students and staff build foundational financial skills. Mpilo has driven cultural awareness and transformation through social committees at EY and UCT, ensuring inclusive spaces where diverse voices are heard and celebrated.

Together, they exemplify the spirit of the Social & Sustainability Impact Award — demonstrating that collaboration, innovation, and purpose-driven leadership can create lasting change. Their work is a testament to what’s possible when young professionals use their training not only to advance their careers, but to uplift communities and shape a better future.
