Talha Essop

Trainee – FirstRand Bank Ltd | Tax Reform Advocate | Social Impact Leader

Finalist: SAICA Trainee Trailblazer Awards 2025

Talha Essop is a first-year CA(SA) trainee whose work reflects a powerful blend of academic excellence, policy advocacy, and grassroots social impact. His journey is defined by a commitment to driving meaningful change — both within the profession and in society.

Talha’s most notable contribution is his research into a gap in South Africa’s tax legislation that unfairly prevents access to the section 10(1)(q) bursary exemption. Recognising the financial strain this places on students and families, Talha collaborated with senior lecturers at the University of the Witwatersrand to investigate the issue. Their findings were presented at the International Conference of Accountancy and Business in Cape Town in June 2025 and will be published in the conference proceedings.

Determined to turn research into action, the proposal was submitted to National Treasury and SARS, who have since confirmed that it will be considered as part of the 2026 Budget deliberations. This work has the potential to unlock fairer access to education for thousands of South Africans — a legacy of impact that extends far beyond the boardroom.

Equally inspiring is Talha’s work with FirstRand’s “Keeping Girls in School” programme, where he serves as the only male committee member. The initiative raises funds and runs school-based activations in underprivileged communities, educating learners on menstrual health and providing reusable sanitary kits designed to last throughout high school. Talha’s involvement challenges stereotypes and stigma, advocating for menstrual health as a shared social responsibility.

Within FirstRand, Talha actively fosters collaboration across business units, bringing graduates together to amplify the reach and impact of volunteering and CSI initiatives. His efforts are helping these programmes engage a broader audience, ensuring that meaningful work connects with more people across the organisation.

Talha was also recently nominated as a “First-Class Custodian” - a recognition awarded by fellow employees to those who consistently demonstrate dedication, positive impact, and a commitment to FirstRand’s values. His energy and collaborative spirit make him a standout contributor in the graduate community

Talha’s academic achievements are equally impressive. He holds a Bachelor of Accounting Science and a Bachelor of Accounting Science Honours in Taxation from WITS, where he was a Golden Key Honours Society member, Dean’s List awardee, and top student in his honours degree.

His work directly advances several Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities). Whether advocating for legislative reform, mentoring students, or promoting dignity in schools, Talha leads with purpose, empathy, and action.
