Public sector

SAICA is committed to assisting its members and government in the turnaround and professionalisation of the public sector through regular engagements with key stakeholders in the public sector (such as the Auditor General of South Africa, South African Local Government Association, National Treasury and Department of CoGTA), technical support and advocating for improvement in legislation and standards.

Some of the key projects driven under the public sector:

  • Professionalisation of the public sector
  • Improvement in public finance management

Professionalisation of the public sector

SAICA supports the professionalisation of the public sector and is currently advocating for this through various initiatives which includes:

Public sector consultants

While external consultants can play a valuable role in enhancing public finance management and supporting the sustainable delivery of services, their impact within the public sector remains a subject of debate. Persistent challenges related to governance, capacity, transparency, and accountability continue to hinder progress and limit the effectiveness of professional consultants. SAICA’s research into the consulting landscape sheds light on the factors contributing to these perceptions, offering in-depth insights into the consulting ecosystem. It also highlights the root causes of inefficiencies and advocates for lasting, fit-for-purpose reforms - most notably, the professionalisation of the public sector, to drive meaningful and sustainable change in the public sector.
