Small-Medium Practices (SMP) Forum

The objective of the SMP Forum is to identify the needs of and promote the interests of members in small and medium practices within the framework of the profession and to encourage their participation in the profession.


The SMP Forum meets quarterly and seeks to assist SAICA in the discharge of its duty to foster a culture of continuous learning in the members and associates of SAICA, to enable them to enhance and maintain their professional competence and relevance, and to implement any approved SMP practice’s project that will contribute to the maintenance and development of the professional competence of members, associates and future members.

With the assistance of district associations, the committee has the following responsibilities:

  • To ensure adequate representation of small and medium practice members on regional councils

  • To constantly monitor the needs, interests and challenges of SMP members with a view to considering and making recommendations on matters submitted to the committee, national SMP Committee, SAICA and Council

  • To constantly improve communications between SMP members by, for example, initiating and encouraging discussion groups

To encourage SMP members to comment on exposure drafts relating to:

  • Legislation (development and implementation)

  • Accounting standards (influencing the setting and implementation)

  • Auditing standards (influencing the setting and implementation) and consider and advise on the effect thereof on SMPs

  • To consider and advise on the effect on SMP members of new legislation, rules and regulations as implemented by the relevant stakeholders

  • To advise SAICA on learning opportunities appropriate and relevant to the needs of SMP members

  • To encourage SMP to undertake continuing professional development
