Lungelo Mjabulisi Khumalo is a Chartered Accountant (SA) with more than 14 years of experience in financial management, financial reporting and governance across the public sector, higher education and the private sector. He currently serves as Director: Budget and Management Accounting at the University of Zululand. In this role, Lungelo leads the annual compilation of the university’s budget of approximately R3.4 billion, covering operating, capital and earmarked grant funds. He oversees budget, treasury, creditors and expenditure, asset management, project accounting and the review of IFRS annual financial statements, contributing to consecutive unqualified audit outcomes.

He spent five years at the Auditor-General of South Africa, ending as Assistant Audit Manager, where he led audits of government departments, municipalities and public entities under GRAP, PFMA and MFMA. His career also includes financial accounting leadership at the Independent Development Trust, where he reported on government-funded infrastructure expenditure and conditional grant compliance, and private sector experience as Senior Financial Accountant at Richards Bay Coal Terminal.

Lungelo chairs the Finance, Investment and Audit Sub-committee of the University of Zululand Pension and Provident Fund and serves on the University Investment Committee and University Management Committee. He holds an MCom in Accountancy from North-West University and is completing a PhD in Accounting at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, focusing on financial governance capability and financial sustainability in South African public universities. He has published in this field and has tutored the Capstone in Applied Accounting Sciences module at UNISA.
